SPORTS - Crockett ISD Names

 Gym After Coach Hopkins

Crockett, Texas - On Friday, January 20, 2012, the Crockett Independent School District had the Official Naming Ceremony of its new Safe Dome/ Gymnasium, the Andrew J. Hopkins Event Center Safe Room/ Gymnasium. The facility is named after longtime Crockett ISD educator and coach, Andrew J. Hopkins.  Crockett ISD began the project of constructing a safe doom two years ago. In November 2011, Crockett ISD received a grant in the amount of $3,371,300 from the United States Treasury Department. The money is for the construction of a multi-purpose storm shelter facility. The facility will be constructed on the Crockett ISD campuses.  At present, this will be the largest in the country.   Many were present for the ceremony to name the safe room. He is known by many names,

baseball all in the same year. He was later drafted by the United States Army where he served as a Flight Traffic Clerk. Mr. Hopkins held teaching positions at Mount Pleasant High School, Williams High School, and Crockett Colored School/Ralph Bunche/Crockett High School where he became Athletic Director.  Mr. Hopkins has taken several teams in all three sports to the state finals and winning. Mr. Hopkins was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Prairie View in 1989 and awarded the Ring of Honor by Crockett ISD in 2010.

City of Crockett Mayor Wayne Mask presented Mr. Hopkins with a key to the City of Crockett and a proclamation proclaiming January 20, 2011 as Andrew J. Hopkins Day. In attendance were family members, friends, community members, and officials of Houston County to witness the official naming of the facility.

Mr. Hopkins received congratulatory letters from both US Senators, Congressman Joe Barton and Congressman Kevin Brady had staff members to present United States flags to Mr. Hopkins. As well, Senator Robert Nichols and Representative Marva Beck gave Mr. Hopkins flags that had flown over the Texas State Capital. Houston County District Attorney Donna Kaspar

Hippo-Hop, Hop, Fessor, Coach, and Mr. Hopkins. He earned his Bachelor degree and Masters degree from Prairie View A & M College. After college, he was drafted by the Chicago Bears for football and the Pittsburgh Pirates for

 read the Houston County Proclamation for Mr. Hopkins proclaiming January 20, 2012 as Andrew J. Hopkins Day. Mr. Hopkins served the community and Crockett ISD 57 years and will forever remain a Crockett Bulldog.
