Charles
Denman still sings Blues, Bebop and Jazz
The
Blues emerged in the late 1890s following slavery. Prior to that
time the main ingredient of black music was field hollers which
served as a means of communication and as work songs to keep
time with a task and soothe the troubled minds of plantation
slaves.
The call and response of expression from the hollers style
remained a part of blues music, but a new style was
incorporated, whereby the blues singer responded to himself or
herself. Blues music reflected the new status that Black
people gained with their freedom. The first recording of
the blues was 1895, George W. Johnson’s “Laughing Song”.
By the 1920s Mamie Smith’s recording of “Crazy Blues” opened the
doors for other classic blues singers when her recording priced
at one dollar each sold 75,000 copies in the first month.
